video finalization takes forever/hangs

I downloaded the trial version of SnagIt and tried to do a test video. It hung at finalization stage. After crashing out and rebooting my pc, I tried again, producing a tiny 2 x 2inch video of about 5 seconds. Again the finalization carried on for over 30 minutes before I crashed out again. I can't buy this product with this problem.

Hey Simon,

Just so I understand correctly, this is happening every time you record, with every video? Are you using the trim feature at all, or just producing out the video?

This is happening every time and no, I'm not using the trim feature. I'm just trying to produce a basic video to see how it works

Hey Logan don't close this cas as I try to record a small video and not to large of a screen size and I start the recording using the Shift F9 and Stop it using the Shift F10 and even when I click on the Start and Stop Buttons it does not finalize the video at all. It just hangs up and never seems to Finalize the video to give me any options to save it. Any ideas? Let us know if this is a bug or if and what the solution would be to fix this issue. Thanks.

Steve I have had a similar problem with the video finalizing in SnagIt 12. Nate from TechSmith Support told me the way to work around this to make your video finalize is to use the Video on the Capture Profiles which is the little popup window. Then when you click that Video for the Profile and then do your recording it works. At least it did for me. It is a workaround and they are looking in to what might cause then and will hopefully have a solution in the near future. Give that a try and see if it makes a difference. I am using Windows 7 64-Bit System on my Laptop with 8GB of memory. I hope this helps and let us know if this works for you or not. Thanks for posting and have a great day.

We shipped version 12.1 on July 10, and I think this should be resolved. You can have both version 11 and version 12 on your computer side-by-side if you want to give it a try without going all in with 12.1.

If you're still having this problem, we should make sure to get you in touch with support so they can drill down to the root cause and work with the development team.

Sorry for the trouble,
Mike Curtis

I am having exact same issue. Unless the the video is very very short (3 secs) it freezes during "Finalizing video". I have version 12.0.0. Is the upgrade an actual fix and can I get the upgrade without paying? Otherwise I can only look for another solution and advise our IT dept to do the same. I need to have something for a demo for clients within a day and it is very frustrating when basic functionality is not even working.

Hi there!

Are you experiencing the issue with every video? What version of Snagit are you running? What version of Windows are you running? What type of content are you attempting to capture? Are you able to capture images fine?

Hi all,
I have the same issue.
Finalizing video takes forever and when it finishes, the end of the video is missing (about 3 sec).
Capturing images works fine.

Snagit version 11.4.3 build 280 - Apr 18 2014
Windows 10 pro, 64-bit, 8G RAM

Hope there's a solution for this...

I am having the same issue.

I am using windows 8  64-Bit System on my Toshiba Satellite P-75A7200 Laptop with 8GB of memory.

Snagit version 11.4.3 build 280 - Apr 18 2014

I unloaded a lot of files from my library but it did not correct the issue. I am not willing to pay to upgrade as long as these problems continue.

I had a problem sometime back but it would simply crash. This time is just hangs on long captures at the "Finalizing Video" or takes forever (5minutes - for a 10 second clip)!  It just started this issue.
When I go to the task manager there is no disk or CPU activity occurring with snagit or the editor though they are occupying memory.

The system can do timed  image captures with no problems over the same region - its always the video captures that cause the failures. I am attempting to capture a region on my desktop screen to log video conversations.

Ok... A followup.

I reloaded all new drivers and updates for essentially everything on the laptop. Nothing with the drivers corrected the problem with the previous snagit.

I then loaded snagit 13.1.0 trial (32-bit) on top of my previous snagit 11.4.3 because the issue was getting out of hand.

The loading of 13 corrected my issues and I was happy to see it remembered my original settings.

This seems to have resolved the issue for now. Looks like corruption may have occurred in previous installation as it will still not run. The issue is not in the laptop drivers for sure.

Thanks for the update!
I also installed the 13.1.0 version and everything seems to be working fine.
Unfortunately it's only for 15 days trail and not a long term solution.

I also have the same issue. I hope TechSmith does not expect us to buy the latest version in order to get rid of this problem? It appered today for the first time, worked fine for many years. I changed nothing on my PC. Even no updates on Windows.

When searching for 'finalizing' you will see quite a number of threads on this subject. Probably for pre v13 versions, this will not be fixed anymore, regretfully so.
Hence, either use  FastStone instead or installed v13.

Why not? Has this been stated somewhere. It takes hours especially after cutting empty surplus. As does the following saving process.
