In previous version the image effects had the option to set a transparent color. I can't seem to find it in Snagit 11.

Hi Doug,

Thanks for taking the time to share your question. I made a short video describing how you can change the "Canvas Color" to transparent so that image effects have a blank background: http://screencast.com/t/11bKiS0u

Let me know if I missed the mark on your question :)

Thanks,

Jason

Jason,

Thanks but it's not the canvas color I'm trying to change but a color in the foreground image. In previous versions there was an option, i believe in the Image>Modify >Color Effects selections, that allowed you to select a foreground color and turn it transparent.

Hi Doug,

I had a feeling I might be going down the wrong path with the canvas color. I created another short video with a couple more possibilities: http://screencast.com/t/p2sn1u0N5Ob

Again, apologies if I'm still off the mark :) I think the "Color Substitution" options would be what you were looking for, but unfortunately, that doesn't include support for replacing with transparency. Hopefully the Fill tool example will help out.

Thanks and have a wonderful day (and weekend)!

I'm also looking for the answer to this question. In Snag It 10, you could capture an image, and then on the Image tab, select Color Effects > GIF Transparent Color. Then you would click on the dropper button, then click on the color you want to make transparent. We use this process to create "electronic signatures" that can be pasted into Word documents.

I cannot find this anywhere in v11.

See this video for a demonstration:

OK,

I found it (boy, is this obtuse). If you are editing an image go to Save As... The Save as Dialog pops up and in the right-hand pane it allows you to set a transparent color.

They really should move this back to the Image>color effect menu.

Thanks! That worked. I can't believe they moved that feature.

Dear ladies and gentlemen,

I know and like SnagIt 7.25. Now I'm testing version 11 and have problems with transparency. With v7.25 in the menu bar you can choose the last item from the second menu Edit called Insert, e.g. to insert a GIF picture with your signature. Then, on the left there's a bar called Drawing Tools; on the bottom of this bar you can specify the Insert Mode "use background colour as transparent colour" so that it's possible adding your signature with a transparent background to a form. In v11 I'm looking for the same solution but without success: Can you help me, please;

Sincerely
abhiprayah

Unless I missed this capability somewhere, this is a transparency feature request. I constantly screen capture vendor's product images and logos from their web site, but the original image is often .jpg. I need to put this in a PowerPoint presentation with a gradient background so I need to make back ground transparent without spending 15 minutes per image with a brush to remove the original background. Can you add a lasso or magic wand to isolate the content from the background?
An alternative would be taking all the similar background colors (cause by JPEG algorythm) and grouping then so flood fill and color replacement will treat them as the same color.

Why did you remove transparent as a color choice? I rely on it for callouts when I want a line around a shape, but I want the interior to be transparent. Changing opacity doesn't work, because it acts on the whole shape, not the outline and interior independently. Please bring this back ASAP! I have a deadline to meet!

I use SnagIt 10 at work, my wife uses v11. She keeps asking me how to set transparent color and I keep saying it's Easy! Just go to the Color Effects menu and pick Set GIF transparent color. She can't do that! now I see why...well not with any good reason. Why remove a basic and critical menu option like that? I don't get it. At least the wife and I understand it's not our communication style.

I have the same problem here. The documentation says to go to Image - Modify - Color effects and there is no transparency option listed. I have been looking now for a few hours trying to figure out how to just take "white" and make it "transparent" everywhere so I don't have to fill every little "O" and "B" in my text with the fill tool. Maybe I am missing something, but the documentation is not helping here if it was changed.

So when fixed, let us know.

I personally have not yet upgraded to SnagIt 11 but have found this concise description of how to set transparency. Rather than call it "broken" I'd classify it as "moved" though I don't see why they had to. Anyway, here is the blog entry.

Hey Don, thanks for the help. I solved this in Camtasia as when I bring the image over I can select a color to be transparent easily. I just have to create everything with a white background.

It is not very easy in Snagit though as best I can tell. Thanks for the link.

Cheers

While this is an old post, it still pisses me off that they moved this and made it such a PITA to set transparency.  Even goggling brings up the old method on the techsmith page.  To this day I am sorry I ever upgraded.

Hi guys,

if you want to pick only one color and make it transparent, you have to "SaveAs" the document in GIF format. See picture below.

Best regards,

Move it back into the interface, this is after the fact. Us core techsmithies (ultra-users) might only be a small percentage of the market that uses it. I used to use this feature in Microsoft Word's photo editor, than they ended it, then they had it in their Word interface, then they moved it, then techsmith had it, then they moved it. I realize this isn't a widely used feature, but it's incredibly handy for anyone who is a slightly above average user. And we're the group that refers others to purchase your product because we're seen as the above average expert in the offices/circles we run in.
