When will Snagit support High DPI awareness on Windows 10

Any plans for SnagIt to support High DPI awareness (https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/dd464646(v=vs.85).aspx) on Windows 10?  Currently, the latest SnagIt 13 user interfaces fail to scale properly on the additional low-dpi screen(s) when there is a high DPI screen in the mix.

Yes, and it makes the interface unusable in the process!

+1 SnagIt doesn't scale properly on my Surface Book which has a high DPI screen. The only usable part of capture ribbon that floats around on the edges is the big red button. Trying to access any menus is impossible due to the tiny size of the text and menus.

This has been a persistent issue for some time.

This might be a workaround until there's an actual fix from TechSmith. Right-click on the snagit32.exe file and select "Properties". Then click on the "Override high DPI scaling behavior" checkbox and then choose "System" from the dropdown. See the arrow below. When I did that it now scales properly on my high DPI Surface Book screen.

This worked for me. Although, I had to do it also for the Snagit Editor program. I also had to go to the task manager and kill / restart the tasks to take effect. I used System (Enhanced) instead of System in the DPI override.

I have an external monitor at lower resolution than my Microsoft Surface (this will be our standard build for 200 users) and it makes it very difficult to use Snagit.

I have just upgraded to Snagit 2018 but it did not fix the problem :<

Hi James, we made some improvements to the Selection/Crosshairs for High DPI and multiple DPI setups in Snagit 2018. But you're right, not yet addressed for Capture and Editor. We are looking at this next in a maintenance/minor for Snagit 2018. If you had to prioritize which to look at first: The Capture Window or the Editor, which would you like to see fixed first?

Next maintenance? This has been a problem for at least 2 years. We will definitely not be upgrading to 2018 or any other version until this problem is resolved.

Jeff, completely understood that this is a issue that you want fixed and won't be upgrading until then. Fixing this, unfortunately, takes multiple steps. Crosshairs/Selection UI have had progress made. Editor and Capture up next. Do you have sense for which part of Snagit would be best addressed first, based on your usage?

No. Usage of the entire product is degraded if you're limited to the hardware that can be successfully used. And to continue to say "we're working on it" degrades your company in general. As a programmer and product developer for many years, I know I would be expecting an exodus if I couldn't resolve a high visibility issue like this after more than 2 years. Hardware is only getting better and cheaper - do you not expect more people to be affected by this? Stop adding "features" to your products until you fix the current bugs.

3 months later, still no resolution Jeff? Really? I just shelled out $25 for the upgrade to 2018 hoping it would be fixed.... nope. I can do the scaling override trick which helps my capture and editor app, but when I am doing the actual capture, I can only select a portion of my screen.

That is the largest window I can capture, which is about 1/3 of my actual monitor.

I'm guessing you meant Chris. I'm as frustrated as you are. My company is actively seeking a replacement product.

i am using an old laptop just so I can use Snagit. Please fix! There are several new "features" that make it more difficult to use in general, but this is literally unusable. It crashes my machine, the click delay makes it unusable, and my video memory runs out. I use Snagit daily, and now I have to find some other tool until this is fixed, or carry around 2 laptops.

Hi Mari;

Have you opened a support ticket? Given the problems that you are having on the machine it seems that there are some technical issues happening and Support would be best suited to addressing them.

i had to switch to another app after years of buying Snagit for my biz. But what' not clear to me is there only an issue with mixed resolution displays or with all 4k multi monitors even if identical monitors, identical settings?

Microsoft have moved this forwards and I have had some success with other applications.

You may wish to update your version of Windows 10 and try the suggestions made by ReyBango above.

Yes, I have the latest Windows 10 and that suggestion above helps in some ways. However, the problem is, if your main monitor is your Hi-Rez monitor and then your other monitors are standard resolution the problem is not so easily fixed, for me anyway

In case this helps other people, if you can set one of your low resolution monitors as your primary monitor you may fix it on the low resolution monitors.

So over 2 years and no plans to fix this? High DPI screens are becoming the norm on portable devices like Surface and most mid-high end laptops. Having a mix of high and 96 DPI monitors is no longer unusual. All the tools to handle DPI properly are in the Win32 API for Windows 10.

We have a closed beta ongoing right now with some fixes aimed at addressing this issue. It should end this week. If there are issues what we uncover, we'll want to fix them. Once we fix those (or don't uncover anything huge), we'll send out the beta build to the folks on this thread that signaled their interest in trying out a pre-release build.

After that round, we'll include fixes in the following maintenance update!

HI Chris

Just curious if the beta is testing to see if the changes resolve the problem of the cursor mismatch in SnagIt where you hover a control point but the mouse doesn't change until you figure out where the "hot" area is hiding.

Usually many pixels away from the control point. I'm not sure if my machine fits the "high DPI" specs, but I see that issue frequently.

Cheers... Rick :)

We haven't seen that bug in any internal tests with these changes. So I'm hopeful it's fixed. But It would be great to have you test out the build in a few weeks, if possible, and tell us if it's fixed for you!

I would be interested to try the beta - I have a surface pro with 2 lower res monitors and this renders Snag it 2019 for which I have just upgraded to - useless

Hello all,

Tuesday we released version 2019.1.2 of Snagit Windows with much better support for multiple monitors using different DPIs. We know this has taken some time; it has required some fundamental changes to Snagit’s UI. We now have Snagit in a place where it can seamlessly move between monitors without getting ridiculously big or small. This would have impacted you in previous versions if you have a very pixel dense laptop and an external monitor (or more). I want to thank you all for your patience and those that tried it out before we updated to make sure this was working as expected. It's all very much appreciated. If you are seeing additional problems related to this, please don't hesitate to let us know here.

You can download the latest version here: https://www.techsmith.com/download/snagit/ or check for updates if you are running a previous Snagit 2019 version.

Thank you!

Hi Chris, I am having the exact same issue as this with Camtasia 2019. I work with a laptop with 2 external monitors - one 4K and one 1080p. The application looks good on my 4K screen, but when moving it to my 1080p screen the application does not automatically adjust its scaling and continues to use the High DPI icons and UI elements, meaning it is absolutely unusable on that screen.

This was not an issue with Camtasia 9 (did not use 2018).

Is there a fix coming for Camtasia 2019?
