Hello,

As programmer the Text capture feature was very, very useful for me. Just right now trying the latest version of Snagit I see that text capture feature has been removed!. Why?.

Somewhere it says it was too hard to maintain.

(I use this frequently and found this one of the very useful features of Snagit. )

Hello Cesar and Nicole,

Sorry to have disappointed you with the removal! Text capture was difficult to maintain, with new operating systems not supporting it adequately enough to ensure it was a high quality feature. Are you enjoying Snagit 12 otherwise? If this feature is important enough for you to want to revert to Snagit 11 to get back, please let me know. I can help you!

Kaitlin, by offering your help for us to revert to v11 only supports our revelations that TechSmith missed the mark by a mile with v12.  I have not only gone back to 11.4, but have done so by requesting a full refund.  Loyalty apparently doesn't buy much these days.  I best finish quickly before this item gets merged with another one and closed for the duration.

But I commend your courage as an Evangelism Coordinator, whatever that is.

Hi Kaitlin - I also found this feature useful. V11 is still installed on my computer so I can exit V12 and load V11 when I need this feature. It is a shame though. Please pass this along.  -  Greg

Kaitlin, I could not agree more.  I spent a lot of time looking for this feature to find it's been removed. I used this often.  EXTREMELY disappointed in the removal of features and the terrible change to the UI.  Dark, dreary and less functions.  So why did I upgrade?  I suppose I expected more features and an improved UI.  It's kinda why I spent the money.  Going back to v11 soon.  A home run I'd say!  Nice one.  Not!

There is another (albeit... kludgy) option. Since V12 installs along side V11, the older version is still usable. Just uncheck the options "Always keep Editor running in background" and "Run Snagit when Windows starts", and execute the one you need most for the task at hand. That would help for text capture functionality, but not at all as far as the background theme is concerned. However, they have specifically stated that they were going to make that changeable. After I complained via a tweet to @Techsmith, they replied to me with: "thanks for sharing your thoughts on the update. We will add an option to change canvas color" - of course, there was no time frame specified, so it could be months or even a year or more.

Really?!?!?! It's "too hard" for you to come up with a solution?!?! Oh dear, what a sorry state for a software company to be. Must be good to have a job where you can just say "too much like hard work" and just thow the towel in.

Won't come\ looking for software you you chaps again....... as if it becomes a little too difficult you'll just pack up and ho home.

Just so you know. You could download and install SnagIt 11 and use a SnagIt 12 key to activate it. SnagIt 11 still captures text. The only drawback is it won't be updated for any bugs and it may give you problems on a windows 10 system. I don't know that for a fact but it is a possibility.

You can download SnagIt 11 from here.

http://www.techsmith.com/download.html

You also have 30 days to get your money back. That's the best options that I'm aware of.

Good Luck, Regards, Joe

This is huge dissappointment.  I have been a loyal customer of Snagit for 20 years.  Text capture is extremely important to me in my business.  I am forced to digress to V11 (which eliminated Library folder view, also creating a hardship for me)

I mentioned this in another thread but since there seems to be a lot of discussion about it:

I've found the best alternative to this is to use Nir Sofer's SysExporter.

From his own description: "SysExporter utility allows you to grab the data stored in standard list-views, tree-views, list boxes, combo boxes, text-boxes, and WebBrowser/HTML controls from almost any application running on your system, and export it to text, HTML or XML file."

The website is:

Text Capture gone in version 12 - A STEP BACKWARDS!.

I am so dissapointed with Techsmith decision to remove text capture from version 12.  I really cannot believe they actually did it.  Is Techsmith loosing contact with their end users?

New releases are made to enhance products.  Techsmith crippled SnagIt in version 12.  Please I urge you... GIVE US BACK TEXT CAPTURE!!!

"The code was difficult to support",
so we ditched it!  What kind of mentality is this?  Whoever is making these decisions should be FIRED!!!

at:

as an alternative you may wish to:

- try/buy (usd.9.95) Abbyy Screenshot Reader (it does not keep layout, like fonts, linespaces, but does capture things like warning-popups)

or
- revert to 11.3 or 11.4 (asking or a refund)

Text Capture?.

I have been using Snagit in my business for many years and recently upgraded to v 12. Text Capture is one of my most used and important functions and I am extremely disappointed to see that it has been removed from the program. As a result I have just re-installed v 11.4.3 in order to have access to Text Capture. Please bring it back.

However, I do like the new design and interface of v 12, including the darker color scheme - well done!

I'm amazed that such a fundamental feature was ripped out of SnagIt v12!  Are you kidding me? You need to rethink this!

Currently I'm temporarily using a utility or Google OCR. As a developer I use the Tesseract project, currently open source. Additionally, FreeOCR (http://www.paperfile.net ) is a sample of frontend application that uses the free-open-source Tesseract project. On this way, Snagit will be considering all users that have Win8 or Metro applications. If Snagit does not take in account this feature, is missing all this mentioned users. I'm a developer and use a lot the OCR feature to extract data related to columns in SQL Server or to grab technical documentation available in PDF files.

Thank you.

I think FreeOCR uses existing files or a scanner as a source? SnagIt is converting screencaptures to text. When searching on Internet for, let say, 'OCR screenshot'
some other tools pop-up, like Capture2Text (free) or VeryPDF Screen OCR (30 bucks or so). Haven't tried either one of them. Capture2Text looks promising, however, virustotal showed a Detection ratio: 4 / 54, so I won't be installing that.

As for me, one way or the other v.11.3 text capture stopped working, I have not been able to capture any text for - I don't know how long. Even plain text doesn't work anymore. I have given up on SnagIt text capture and use other methods.

The below is from Acrobat text recognition then pasted into Word.

It does not make sense to report this and ask for support, v.11.x is not supported anymore.

Version 11.3 may be the version that Text capture was removed. That feature was removed around that time frame. I'm just not certain it was that version. Installing an earlier version will restore that feature to you.

You can download and install a new or an older version from this link.

Selecting the "Free Trial" Icon will download the newest version.

 http://www.techsmith.com/download.html

If you can't locate your Activation Key use this site for that.

You need to Submit your e-mail address to this Web Page to get your Key.

 http://www.techsmith.com/support/lostkey.asp

You need to uninstall 11.3 to install an older version.Just be sure to Select Save Files when the Image pops up during the 11.3 uninstall process. See Image Below

I think it was removed starting v12
(resulting in the flood of threads with v.12 in the title and many moving back to v11.x)

As for me though, I found a workaround and using either Abbyy Screenshot reader, or copy paste a screenshot into Acrobat and run Text Recognition there. So I could live with thát.

However, there is no workaround for the problem I have with v12: they removed the possibility to cover all(!) the different profiles by 1 global hotkey, the printscreen button.
I select one of the profiles (I have around 30) hit PrintScreen, that's it.
Another profile? Select that one and printscreen will do the job.

They could not explain why they changed this (a logical way of working for me)', but could only advise to stick to v11.

I stand corrected. 11.4.3 still does text capture. I just tested it. It sounds like a either a  repair install or a reinstall is all you need. But if you purchased Abbyy you already have what I consider to be a better tool for text capture anyway. Looking closer at this portion of this thread, most of this information is becoming a bit redundant at this point.

Am running 11.4.3
Likely found it: "Text capture is not supported on Mozilla Firefox version 15 or later".
I tried tried to capture text  from a site using FF v32.  Then I tested and tried to capture something from Word 2013 - that is not supported either, as "Snagit can act as an OCR when combined with Office 2003 or 2007 libraries" only. Capturing text from an text editor is fine though. Ah well, so be it... :-)

Why would anyone want to "capture" text from a text editor? All you need to do is copy text from a text editor.

I think that the more the better for delivering bad news to TechSmith that they cannot simply remove features without announcing what will be missing. Obviously THEY knew they would take it away, but they did not think to let us know. So I have wasted an hour online looking at instructions for using a feature that I subsequently could not find in my current version.

THIS *WILL* BE THE LAST TIME I PURCHASE ANY UPGRADE TO THIS APPLICATION WITHOUT A FULL DISCLOSURE OF ALL FEATURES REMOVED.

I recommend all customers subscribe to this credo, and alert the product department at SnagIt that they feel the same way as I do.

I am a developer and have been using your product since the 90's. I use snagit to capture error messages from windows in a text format. The error messages sometime have sql queries that are failing. Some of these queries can be huge. I used the text capture to capture the queries and run them in the database to find the problem. Now that you've removed text capture I will have to find another tool that has text capture.

I am in the same boat as you.  I process data and work with many types of files/formats.  Text capture is integral to my job.  I am not a social media amateur looking for cute smartphone apps.  I relied on Snagit for 15 years to provide the tools.  I am now a TechSmith ex-loyalist.

This news stinks. I use text capture all the time although I may be one of very few users who do. I work for a development company and understand your position, but  I cannot believe you would disable such a valuable feature.

I use this tool for designing web forms. The features saves me and my coworkers hours of work.

Please bring back text capture. I didn't use it very often, but it was one of those "jewels" that when you need it, you really need it. I hear your remark about difficult to maintain, but for me, this feature was just about getting some useful text. When the formatting wasn't perfect it was still okay (for example, Windows error message dialog boxes).

They won't !
Sorry.

They explained their decision once and that's it.

As from version 11.3 they have removed a number of things and they will not re-introduce them, regretfully so.
Actually, I am afraid they may even not watching this thread. Likely all threads with 'Bring back in this' 'Bring back in that' are being skipped, or at least they won't add any replies anymore.

From my point of view upgrades are not always an improvement...
Depending on your requirements, they may even mean a downgrade.
So, a lot of 'oldtime users' went back to v11 !

On the other hand,  I guess the group of new users and/or v12-upgraders seems to be big enough to continue on that path and they will not 'consider to re-consider'...

I am on SNAGIT v11.4.3 (build 280)- APR 18 2014 and Cannot get the Text tool to work. Do I have to go back to 10? NOT happy, and in QA we need the Text feature often... Also, when changing from the floating button, Image to Text, it will not work. I have to open the separate window, then click on Text to make it work. NOT happy :(

I believe it's version 11.2.1 that you would want to use. You don't need to revert all the way back to version 10. I don't use the feature myself. But people started to complain it was missing  with version 11.3. You can download and Install 11.2.1 from here.

You can download and install a new or an older version from this link. Selecting the "Free Trial" Icon will download the newest version.

@Mike, this is just a profile that was installed from SnagIt 10. See Image Below.

I had profiles that were carried over from version 8 in SnagIt 12.  I didn't actually delete them until then. I don't know why I waited that long. I never used them.

@Joe - for good order's sake, the '10' refers to the 10 profiles in the imported category. I don't use text capture for a while already. I just tried it a few times, it doesn't work. Although, officially it has been taken out as from v12 (reason for all the fuzzz)

text capturing from, let's say, a text-editor still works fine in 11.3

On the other hand the text capture is not supported on some operating systems and web browsers.

Text capture is not supported on

    Microsoft Windows 8 operating system
    Internet Explorer on Windows 8
Mozilla Firefox version 15 or later
    Google Chrome
    Some dialog messages

text capturing from website using latest version of Firefox, or running Windows 8? Forget it.

I have owned Snagit for many years and many versions. I made the mistake of downloading Snagit 12 BEFORE I found out that it no longer supports text capture. Are they crazy over there? What a stupid insensitive backward move! I will now take that piece of trash off my computer and go back to the last Snagit version containing text capture because it works (or find a product that supports its dedicated followers). I will not buy ANY Techsmith products again until text capture returns to Snagit. If it does not, so long Techsmith. You messed up.

Thank you for your continued feedback and interest in Snagit.  We originally made the decision to drop text capture based on a variety of reasons, the biggest being that continued changes in OS support caused significant ongoing development efforts to try to maintain what proved to be a feature that continued to degrade due to those same OS changes.  In the intervening time since that decision, things have not changed significantly.  At this time there are no plans to bring back text capture.  That being said, we are listening, and hear the value this feature offered.  We will continue to consider alternative approaches that could allow us to bring text capture back in some form, but to be clear, at this time we have not found a suitable alternative.

As always, thanks for your feedback!

Hello;

I think a quick alternative, easy development is to implement the capture of the region as image and its subsequent automatic OCR processing. This alternative is more than proven that it works, even in modern operating systems like Win8.

Thank you.

"suitable alternative" for me was the way it was before. worked fine for me (and sounds like many others). If someone was on an uncaptiple OS, the too bad for them. Please bring it back  - thanks for listening....

Snagit currently allows capture a region as an image.. next step to do will be process this image with a OCR component / library tool. You don't believe me?... other third part companies (as ABBYY) are using this approach.. and works..
