Hello,

As programmer the Text capture feature was very, very useful for me. Just right now trying the latest version of Snagit I see that text capture feature has been removed!. Why?.

I, like many others on this post, will be looking for an alternative to SnagIt when my next renewal comes up.  OCR is a good workaround, but it places NO VALUE on people's time -it is another step on what used to be a one step process.

The OCR process will be performed automatically, next to capture the image as normal usage. So the OCR process is related to a background process.

This was a helpful feature.  I admit, I didn't use it often, but helpful when I did.  I recently moved to SnagIt 12.  I too am disappointed with removal of features.  Originally, I didn't like the UI change either.  I recently watched the video on the TechSmith web site about SnagIt 12 and they explained why they made the UI dark.  It's so we can focus easily on the content rather than see the UI as much.  It would be easy, I assume for them to make a UI theme option, making both types of folks happy.

What I'd really like versions to focus on is improving clicking time to features.  For example, I use the button in the ribbon Copy All, all the time.  I dislike how I have to always go back to that tab on the ribbon to use it.  It really should be someone available in the UI regardless of where in the ribbon you are.  Also, if I am constantly making an object a certain way, it should ask (if I configure it to) if I wanted to make it a style or something.  Thanks.

I have to agree with everyone who has complained about the demise of saving as text.

In our case, we used this feature to capture the contents of drop-down list boxes.  We have two main reasons where this is absolutely vital and time-saving.

First is that we often question the sequence, and wish to illustrate to the programmer what sort of sequence we expect.  You can't do this easily with a picture - even if a picture does say a thousand words.

Second, we were then able to paste the text in to our Help file development program, Madcap Flare.  And again a picture of words is absolutely no use when your help files have to be used by a blind person using a screen reader.

And to rub salt in to that wound, it then meant that the Help part of the application was no longer Section 508 compliant.  A very SERIOUS mistake on TechSmith's part.

For those of you who do not know what "Section 508 Compliance" is, in very simple terms is basically an American Federal Law which says that software purchased by the Federal Government must be accessible to users with a visual disability.

There are similar statutes in other countries around the world.

Yes we can indeed mess around with OCR as some have suggested, but sometimes with the work involved in checking errors and such like, you may as well copy type the whole [expletive deleted] lot from scratch!

George.

I'm a new user and I only bought SnagIt for the Text Grabbing Feature.  I am in IT and I need to be able to grab Text.  I'm going to try to download the old version, but this is very disappointing!  I would use the Windows Snipping tool for free if this is all I can do with Snag It :(

I agree with all of the responses to bring the feature back. We need it to capture text from older programs that do not have a copy function, like Lotus Notes.  It was there before and worked, why not keep it there for those who have the proper configurations?

Please do not reply with your canned response.  I'd like to hear the real reason why it was dropped.

Management makes mistakes.
TechSmith should admit it.

SnagIt 12 is garbage. SnagIt does not stand out from competition without Text capture.
I currently use the old version under Windows 8.1 to capture text from screens that don't offer export functionality.

When my SnagIt version 11 stops working, I will be dropping SnagIt altogether because it no longer beats the competition.

This fad with being cross-platform is the feature that should have been thought carefully about. Ask how many users actually care about it. You'll be surprised at how low that figure is. Despite most of our environment in the office or at home becoming more diverse in terms of platforms, we don't use those platforms the same way in our every day lives and we don't have the need for SnagIt on each of those platforms.

Netflix made a mistake with how they decided to change their business model. The consumers revolted and they fixed it. Intuit screwed up multiple times with Quicken, QuickBooks and TurboTax. And they fix their stuff too. Maybe not as fast as users would have wanted, but they do. It's time for TechSmith to show that they care and bring the Text capture back. Now, I only care about SnagIt on Windows platform, so if you port the same mechanism you had in SnagIt 11 to SnagIt 12, so I can use it on Win 8.1, that will be a fix. I don't care what you do with Mac or mobile phones with regard to that feature.

So, "Official Response" Guys, stop giving us the line "when we made a decision" and bring back the text capture just the way it was for sophisticated users who use SnagIt on full-fledged computers, not on phones...

Otherwise, I'm very sorry for you. Your sales will go down the drain...

Sincerely,

Another Lost Customer

Text capture probably is one of the most discussed topics.
Frankly speaking, I am not sure TechSmith is still following the threads about this topic.
Earlier they advised why they won't bring this back into this SnagIt 'Millennium-version'..

Count me as one of the disappointed. I may have to try reverting to Version 11, but I really loath such workarounds.

This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled Text feature missing!!!! :(.

Where is the text feature? This was the main reason to buy this product over the others. Now it's gone! Not good!!!

It's been removed from V12, so means that you have to install V11, which thankfully will run as a separate version on your system.  If you have V12 you can get V11 at no extra cost.

I agree with everyone that it should be brought back, even if it adds to the cost.  It was a major factor in the decision to get SnagIt in the first place,

I've been a SnagIt user since it's earliest days... very disappointed to see the removal of the text capture features.  I recently evaluated version 12 and I have not been too impressed with the new "profiles".  Without the text snagging features ... I'd have to revert to earlier versions or look for a separate screen capturing option. Not sure why the concentration on "video" when TechSmith already has a great program for managing videos (with Camtasia)?

Easy answer to this problem for Microsoft Onenote Users. I use Onenote and Snagit on a hourly basis and there is an easy solution. Capture your image in Snagit 12, copy it, press Windows Key + N to open a Onenote note and paste. Then right click on the image and select "Edit Alt Text" and it will do a pretty good job. Works well for me....

I never learned to use Onenote but now I may look at it again.
I do miss the Text capture and frequently used it. However I have found a workaround that works for me. ABBYY Screenshot Reader (see http://www.abbyy.com/screenshot-reader/?adw=cj) It retails for $30 and through http://www.bitsdujour.com/pc-download I was able to get it for $7.

I hear you - here is another idea download Snagit 11 and enter your 12 key in it - it worked for me - I'm back in business - I loved snagit but if they dont return text capture I will soon learn to UNlove it and use something else - hmmmm maybe they should have made it half price or give my money back.

Today I captured a block of text and it asked me if I wanted to capture as text! So I DID and then pasted it into notepad. I didn't know snagit had this feature. This afternoon, when I had time, I tried to repeat this and I cannot find how I did it or why. Can anyone explain to me what happened?

I have version 12. And I didn't upgrade, technically. I never had 11 on this machine and I think I had 10 on the old one . When my company replaced it, they put 12 on it. I guess what happened was some sort of an anomaly? I snagged a screenshot of my windows explorer and it asked me if I wanted to capture the text so I said yes and then pasted it into notepad and it was a perfect printout of my file list! Now I can't make that happen again.
