Why getting: "project created in an earlier version..." "project must be converted"??

I just worked on a file yesterday and now when I try to open it (on the same machine - and no I didn't upgrade between now and then) I'm getting: "project created in an earlier version..." "project must be converted"??

So when I click "no", nothing opens. And when I click "yes" it opens a blank project and creates a backup that when I try to open gives me the same message. I closed the program. Restarted my computer and I get the same results.

Now I'm afraid to open any other project for fear it will do this with them as well. How can I open my project?

thanks

try this ...

make a copy of the project file

open the copy with a text editor [I use free Notepad++]; you can open with regular Notepad but you'll first need to change the file extension to .txt

near the top of the text file is a value for the Camtasia version; if it says "8.0", set it to "7.0"

if appropriate, change the file extension back to the original project file extension [.camproj]

try to load the [edited] project again; it should prompt you regarding the conversion; just proceed [you're just using a copy of your project file]

does it load/convert this time?

Hi Kayakman,

I got the same error. I worked on the project a few days ago and today I received the same notification. Camtasia version is 8.6.0.
I tried to follow your guide, but in Notepad++ I see only one line with the text [NUL][NUL] and so on...

What should I do in this case?

this is what the top few lines of a Camtasia 8 project file look like ...

<?xml version="1.0"?>
<Project_Data Version="8.00">
<Project_Settings>
<ProfileName></ProfileName>
<ProjectWidth>1920</ProjectWidth>
<ProjectHeight>1040</ProjectHeight>
<IsCustomProject>1</IsCustomProject>
<SavedProjectSettings>1</SavedProjectSettings>
<LastFlashTemplate>-1</LastFlashTemplate>
</Project_Settings>

maybe post the text you are seeing?

If I open the real project via Notepad++, I see the line as on the screenshot 1.
But when I click in Camtasia Yes,Campasia creates a new empty project and if I open this new project with Notepad++, I can see the right lines (screenshot 2).
Unfortunately, if I change version 8 to 7 in this new project, this will not help restore the project, it is still empty.

your 2nd screenshot shows what looks like a normal .camproj file

HOWEVER ... both x,y dimensions are shown at "0" ???

do you know the original project dimensions?

if so, try setting those values, save, and try again ?

I've not seen this before; do these tests with a copy of the project file

here is what works create a project with your new camtasia software then once you have created this new project go to the settings there check the version.

open the new project and the problematic one with notepad.

  "version" : "3.0",
  "editRate" : 30,
  "authoringClientName" :  {
    "name" : "Camtasia",
    "platform" : "Windows",
    "version" : "19.0"

change the version on top to and on the bottom to this new version on the problematic video then it should work.
