Why is my 1080p video blurry??? Worked well in Screenflow

Every time I record head shot video, it results in a blurry, pixelated video.  My hardware is fine, as I used everything the same on Screenflow, which produced great, non-blurry videos.  I also TRIPLE-checked my Camtasia settings, to no avail.  Even if I sit really still and only talk, my face gets pixelated.  What gives?

Hi there!

The capture settings you have shown there are related to the desktop recording functionality; Camtasia should be able to record a sharp picture with the FaceTime camera in your Mac at 720p, though higher resolutions it may struggle (which we're looking to improve). Are you seeing the pixelation and blurriness in the desktop recordings as well?

Interesting, the screencast does not show the same pixelation.  (aside: I'm assuming that by "desktop recordings" you mean the screen recording, aka screencast).  Pixelation is only on the head-shot (i.e. only my face and upper torso showing) recording, which I record with an external Logitech 1080p webcam.  Again, I didn't have the problem before (with Screenflow) and only with Camtasia 2019.  So, the pixelation is consistent with what you described.

Either way, it sounds like you guys are fixing it.  Do you have a link to the issue anywhere?

*** Most Important *** Will the fix be in the version 2020 release that's slated for next month (April 2020)?

Thank you, Robert!

Questions:

1. Are you doing a screen recording of you on a webcam? You’re always going to lose quality if that’s the case. (Think of it as a copy of a copy). Webcams don’t stream at a high nitrate regardless. A screen recording of that stream is going to create a lot of artifacts.

2. What type of camera are you using? If you want the best results, use a camcorder or a DSLR and drop the recording into your video project.

I use a Sony A7III most of the time and it looks fantastic. Webcam quality will always be mediocre at best.

@dmey503, it sounds like it's an issue with Camtasia itself, like @RobertR. mentions above.  At any rate, pixelation never occurred with Screenflow, and my camera is a Logitech 1080p webcam.  I've attached a pic of it.

Thanks for your input though.

Hi.. I am new to the video thing but I have been recording my videos with screenflow using my sony a7iii as a webcam, but the quality sucks. Is that normal?
