why is this support forum not a normal forum like phpbb ?

I'm not sure that I see the relevance.

Get Satisfaction (which is the company behind the Techsmith site) specialises in customer relationship management software rather than just forums... and there are thousands of them out there. Maybe not as many as phpBB forums, but a lot.

I've never run a Get Satisfaction site but I am an admin of a phpBB site and I can tell you that the latter certainly doesn't have a lot of features that allow the admins to monitor what's going on in the discussions. For the sort of site that I run we don't need that, but we aren't selling anything; we're a peer to peer site. (Which Techsmith's is as well to some extent I admit.) However phpBB doesn't really have those kind of "customer relationship monitoring" features even if we wanted them, or certainly not "out of the box" anyway. I would imagine that Get Satisfaction sites do if customer relationships are their forte. For example the "Like" count for individual threads probably lets Techsmith identify customer hot spots.

From an end user perspective I don't see a whole lot of difference between a phpBB site and a Get Satisfaction site. Both have advantages and disadvantages, and neither strikes me as being "better", just "different".
