Why stress tech support is free?

As a camtasia newbie, and a snagit user who never really used the user's forum, I troll this forum almost daily, looking for ideas, 'gotchas', and workarounds.  It is a very GOOD users forum.  There are some pretty smart people who participate here.

I notice that virtually ALL advice to contact tech support stresses that tech support is free.  Did that used to not be the case?  Or are there situations that would incur charges for the average user?

Not trying to stir anything up, just trying to understand something I never paid much attention to.

Hi Glen and thanks for stopping by!

The primary reason that it's mentioned that it is free is likely due to the fact that it's pretty common for technical support to be a paid affair; highlighting that it is free may help encourage users to reach out to use directly through the appropriate channels.
