For an explanation of Snagit for Google Chrome permission requirements, see this article: https://support.techsmith.com/hc/en-us/articles/217633697

I installed the extension for Chrome and have v9.1.3 installed but when I try to use the extension it tells me that I need the app installed. The extension only works with newer versions?

Snagit for Google Chrome has two separate installs/adds:
  1. The extension, which is used to make the capture.
  2. The packaged app, which is used to view, edit, and share the capture.
In this case, you will also need to add the app. Both the extension and app are currently free downloads.

Hope that helps!

What prevents SnagIt from using other folders since you now have the permission for the entire drive?

Hi Gautham,

Nothing. In fact Snagit on Mac and Windows can send images and videos to (and from) any Drive folder. Snagit for Google Chrome works solely within the "TechSmith" folder because that is what is displayed in the library view. It was a workflow choice.

Were you hoping Snagit for Google Chrome had wider Drive capabilities, or are you being cautious about giving access?

Yeah, just being cautious about giving access.

I prefer Snagit have limited access so thank you for doing it that way and describing the permissions in detail. We use Google Drive for projects which are shared with other companies and so there is a need to keep some data private.

+1 here, the tool looks pretty great and I'd gladly pay for it as well, but I can't get to sleep sharing full access to Drive and YouTube to a 3rd party extension. I'd rather have a Lite version that only works with downloads and go from there, or a way to connect it to another service that doesn't contain sensitive information like my Drive.

Just allow us to save the file locally, or share it on Techsmith, similar to Jing.

It's cumbersome to go to Drive just to get a file (not to mention permissions to all drive). Thanks

Hi Amy, I'm going to split this off as its own issue and let the Snagit for Chrome team know about it. It's not something I've seen, personally. Please reference the new topic here: Video not showing up in Drive after YouTube sharing

Quick question.  We use Snagit with our chromebooks at school.  It works great for our staff, but our students are forced through a proxy, which causes Snagit to fail for them.  Do you have a list of IP address or DNS entries we need to allow for Snatgit to work correctly for our students?

Good question! In general, I think that we try to stick with using normal calls to Google Drive, so as long as Google Drive works, Snagit for Google Chrome should hopefully work as well.

That said, one of our developers is taking a peek right now, just to see if there's anything else that might need to get through a proxy. I'll update you after we're done looking at it.

Ok, quick update. We enabled a proxy, and it did look like it broke Snagit for Chrome. When we enabled this setting in the Windows proxy settings, it looked like it fixed it.

The important bit is that it bypasses it for local addresses. I'm not sure if there's an equivalent setting on Chromebooks, but that would be a place to start. We're still looking into other addresses it might use as well. I'll update you if we find anything that might be getting blocked.
