For issues like this you need to file a tech support ticket at http://support.techsmith.com
I don't know if your product is OS related, but Windows XP will be unsupported by Microsoft in a few short months.

Sounds like a video driver problem.   Could be a slow computer as well.    Go to start, run dxdiag wait a little while it might ask you if you want to checked signed drivers chose ok, when it runs click on the display tab, see what the name of the video driver is, then search the internet for the drivers and only download them from the manufacturers website.  I.E. ATI or AMD from amd.com, nvidia from nvidia.com intel from intel.com etc.   Check to see if the drivers are up to date if not update them.    The display tab shows your driver version and date.   Windows updates the computer all of the time, its possible that they updated .net or directx and that update requires newer graphics drivers.  You could contact your manufacturer as well i.e. hp, dell or who ever makes your pc.

I had a similar problem and new drivers and a reboot solved it although now I'm using windows 7 most of the time.

Another tip is I usually make a new user on my computer for making screen videos,  I make a user called teacher, create an account with minimal background and colors and do all of my recording on that account.   i.e. switch user to teacher make a few videos, then switch back to my account.   By having a minimal desktop, colors and other things you'll cut down on things that may mess up your recordings.
