Why has Snagit eliminated Folders from Library?

This conversation has been merged. Please reference the main conversation: Folders view is gone in Library V11.4.

Why has Snagit abandoned Folders in the Library? It is the most powerful tool to manage image locations.

Folders in the Library was one of the best features of Snagit v11.3 - the ability to manage and see what folders the captures resided in. That feature was removed in v11.4. Tagging images with Flags is not granular enough. I had hoped to see Folders back in v12, but sadly it is not.

What was the logic behind removing Folders? What does Snagit provide / suggest as an alternative method?

Hi MarieBeth,

The folder tree was removed in the interests of creating a smoother experience for new users.  There is currently no intention to restore the Folder Tree at this time, but please tell us more about how this affects your workflow!

More specifically on your workaround question, you can use the File > SaveAs option to place your edited snags in any folder.

Smoother experience for whom? I un-installed 11.4 and re-installed 11.3 just for the availability of the folders view. It certainly didn't make anything smoother for me. I see that version 12 has not re-integrated the folders view so I won't be shelling out $25.00 for something I can't work with. I had a much smoother work flow when I could simply navigate to the folder I had saved a capture in and pull it up directly within the editor. With 11.4, and now 12, I have to use Windows Explorer to both save the file and to retrieve it, which is an extra step for each capture I wish to open, thereby slowing things down.

Using Windows Explorer not only creates an extra step but there is no way to preview .snag files and so one has to open it to see if it is the correct file, close it if is not and continue seaching.  Very time consuming.

Removing the folder tree has made SnagIt less useful for long time users.    With both a library tab and a folder tree tab, the user could choose the view that met their needs and  working style.   New users won't have to use the folder tree if they didn't see they need for it.   I don't see that the experience is any different for new users than previously.

Is TechSmith abandoning theirloyal long-time users    If so, I'm very disappointed in what I have, in the past, considered a very user supportive company.

I didn't have the preview problem as I always saved in either *.jpg or *.png format, which I can preview in Windows Explorer.

This decision by T.S. (Tough Luck) is another example of how they have lost touch with their users. "No intention to restore the folder tree" = "No intention of wasting $$$ on software that lowers the bar on every new release". So sad to see such a good application be deprecated in this way.

Hello MarieBeth

You will find that you are not alone and have not been since the introduction of Version 11.4. I asked the same question months ago and there are/were many replies and similar comments posted to my question. I guess TechSmith has not gotten the message and wants to tell us, the users, what is best for us. You can probably view them by searching for I WANT "FOLDERS" VIEW BACK!.
