Workaround for QuickTime Requirement on Techsmith Relay & Camtasia Studio

This post goes out to any server admins out there who are under pressure to uninstall QuickTime in light of the recent end of life / zero-day vulnerabilities.

UPDATE* - this also applies to Camtasia Studio 7 & 8 - if you've got old projects with .mov files.

First of all - Techsmith is fully aware of this issue and working on an update to Relay that doesn't require QuickTime be installed, but in the meantime, I've found and confirmed a workaround.  It's fairly simple really.  Relay only requires the QuickTime reference files & codecs.  QuickTime player itself is not utilized (Techsmith, please correct me if I'm wrong here).  As the vulnerabilities require that an administrator, using QuickTime player visit a malicious page, this effectively mitigates the issue while allowing for continued OS X support.

  1. In the server control panel, go to uninstall or change a program (or equivalent)
  2. Find QuickTime, click the Change button
  3. Ensure that QuickTime Essentials will be installed
  4. Uncheck everything else
  5. Click Change


if for some reason this process doesn't work, just uninstall and reinstall QuickTime.  I recommend telling Relay to stop processing content until this is complete, but you shouldn't need to shutdown the server.

Anyway, I hope this helps somebody who's under pressure to remove QuickTime as I was.

Also, this solution will work with other standard windows software that's crippled with QuickTime removal such as Premiere or Vegas.  They too only call on the codecs and files and not the player.

I just want to expand on Ian Batchelder’s work-around.

I was using this workaround with Premier Pro and After Effects and it worked very well. However, I still couldn’t import any of the MOV files created with any of my cameras into Camtasia 8.

The reason for this was that I no longer had the TechSmith Ensharpen codec installed on my computer. I recently ran a refresh install of Windows 10 which wipes out all of your programs and you have to install all of your programs from scratch.

I was testing Camtasia 8 to see if I could successfully produce a MOV movie. Camtasia let me know that I needed Ensharpen Codec installed in order to perform that task.After installing the codec I successfully produced a MOV movie. Afterwards I was able to import the MOV movies that I could not import previously. You can download the Ensharpen codec here.

If you haven’t already uninstalled QuickTime you should uninstall QuickTime completely first. Then install the newest version of QuickTime that is available version 7.7.9. https://support.apple.com/kb/DL837?locale=en_US

I learned about this workaround on YouTube from someone who calls his site “Explaining Computers”. Christopher Barnett does an excellent job of explaining the MOV format and how Apple’s decision to drop QuickTime for Windows is adversely affecting  MAC users as well. Although to a lesser extent. If you watch this video it is time well spent in my opinion. I am attaching that video  for anyone that is interested.

 At the 3min 28 seconds you can see the steps required to install the QuickTime codecs correctly.
